Wopanaak, Cape Cod’s original language being revived

Wampanoag is a group of five tribes who lived in southeastern Massachusetts area in the 1600’s numbering about 12,000. Wopanaak, the Wampanoag language had a slow death due to the domination of white settlers speaking the English language. Now the language is being revived through the ‘Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project’.

Under the project, a dictionary, word games, story books, coloring books have been created and exclusive language immersion camps are being held. The project was started by a tribal member Jessie little doe in 1993 and she was awarded the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant in October 2010. For more information on the subject please visit
