Welsh health council under cost pressure over translation

The bilingual requirement under the Welsh Language Act is putting the Community Health Councils under immense cost pressure. Under the act, public bodies including CHCs have to translate every document both internal and external into Welsh. According to Carol Davies, Director in the board of CHCs, due to frugal funding the statutory duty of monitoring the National Health Services (NHS) will be affected if all the money is directed into translation of documents.

The director said she would be approaching the health minister for additional funding if every single document has to be translated into Welsh. The Welsh Language Board is unable to react on the matter due to confidentiality under the Welsh Language Act 1993.
