US citizen lands in jail for translating banned book

Thailand born US citizen Joe Gordon was sentenced to 2 ½ years in jail by a court in Thailand for translating a banned book on King Bhumibol Adulyadej into Thai language and posting it online. Mr. Gordon was detained by local authorities while on a visit to Thailand for medical treatment in May.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was given a lighter sentence. His lawyer said he would not appeal the sentence but would apply for royal pardon. Mr. Gordon had posted links to the translations into Thai of unauthorised biography “The King Never Smiles”, published by Yale University Press several years ago while living in Colorado, US.
