Lost in translation at the UN

Alexander Downer, the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General has said his statement last week on drilling for hydrocarbons in EEZ at Cyprus has been misinterpreted by the Greek newspaper media. He said what he meant was lost in translation and that he is willing to help in getting the correct translation to avoid any misunderstanding.

After an hour long meeting with the Cyprus President Demtris Christofias, the UN official had said that UN could play a mediating role in the Cyprus’ problem with Turkey regarding natural gas and oil exploration in the EEZ. His statement on the subject was rejected by government spokesman Stephanos Stephanou due to misinterpretation according to Alexander Downer. Turkey is having territorial dispute with Cyprus since 1974 when it invaded the latter and stationed troops in northern Cyprus. For more information on the subject please visit
