Colorado to provide court interpreters for all cases

The Colorado Judicial Branch has decided to provide court interpreters for all litigants as per an accord reached with the US Justice Department. Though the Judicial Branch was always providing interpreters free of cost to the litigants for criminal cases, it was not so for civil cases if the litigants could afford engaging their own interpreters as a cost saving measure. The Justice Department launched an investigation in the matter on the basis of a complaint filed in 2004.

The matter will be monitored for three years by a court interpreter oversight committee consisting of a public defender, advocate representing the minorities and a prosecutor. The Judicial Branch will provide the service using existing staff free of cost to litigants. For more information please visit
