University of Ulster in Northern Ireland had the privilege of listening to first hand account of developing Japanese machine translation by one of the world’s leading MT specialists, Prof. Katsuyuki Shibata from Fukuoka University, Japan recently.
Prof. Shibata has been working on MT tools since 1986 and developed his first program in BASIC language with 254 lines of code and a 745 words dictionary. Since then it has evolved into a 10,000+ lines of C language code and a 72,000 word, 52,500 idioms dictionary. The tool can translate English into Japanese and vice versa in real time and the translation engine can be used for other languages as well.
The visit of Prof. Shibata was part of a biennial digital art festival organized by University of Ulster. The festival served as a meeting point of creative minds from the world of art, design, software development and the new media.
